How should children brush their teeth?
It would be a good idea to clean the gums even before the first tooth appears. How can we do it?
We place the baby on our lap, close to the chest, and using a swab soaked in water, very gently, without pressure, we clean the gums. It is recommended to do this twice a day – in the morning after breakfast and in the evening after the last meal.
With the eruption of the first tooth, thorough cleaning begins. It is very important to show children how to brush their teeth properly so that they can learn the right habits. With a gauze soaked in water or with a little paste (the size of a lentil grain), clean the teeth as the rule is – with CIRCULAR movements on each surface of the tooth (outside, inside and top). No back and forth movements, and don’t forget to clean the tongue at the end.
At 3 years old, the child should try to brush his teeth twice a day – morning and evening. Pay attention to the toothpaste for the child – there is a large selection of special children’s toothpastes on the market (for starters, choose one with a pleasant fruit flavor). Make sure the ingredients, whether the children’s toothpaste contains fluoride, which is recommended for children up to 6 years of age.
The toothbrush should have soft to medium bristles, but not hard bristles. Pay attention to the size of the brush head – they are mentioned on the packaging and are for a certain age. There are many options with funny pictures and animals.
Dental floss can also be used, but cleaning should be done under the supervision and guidance of an adult. Children over 6 years old should be able to do it themselves.
