Is it possible to sit in the dentist’s chair without fear?
Is it possible for dental procedures to be pleasant and painless? Can periodontal problems be treated without antibiotics? Now yes, with the help of laser therapy!
Dr. Tsvetelina Ivanova shares her experience in the field of laser therapy:
“Yes, it’s now a fact, not a mirage. I started working with low-energy (red light, 680 nm) lasers 7-8 years ago. It was a challenge for me. At first, I used it after tooth extraction for a quick recovery period and for the treatment of periodontal diseases – gingivitis, periodontitis, decubitus from dentures, stomatitis. I was very pleased with the results, so two years ago, without hesitation, I introduced a high-energy diode dental laser—Biolase (with a wavelength of 860-940 nm). In combination, the two types of lasers provide quality and safety.

When treating periodontal pockets, the diode laser has a powerful antimicrobial and disinfecting effect because it destroys the pathological microflora. Each treatment restores 1 mm of the pocket. This cannot be achieved with antibiotics. They temporarily suppress the reproduction of microorganisms, but only for a short period of time. It makes no sense to damage your liver when there is already a new and long-lasting alternative. On the other hand, the red laser has a powerful and analgesic effect on tissues, and when the two rays are combined, they have an incredible effect.
I want the patient to be aware that one procedure cannot solve all problems. If the periodontal pocket is 2 to 4 mm deep, at least 4 visits are necessary, and that over 3-4 days. I have already mentioned that each intervention restores 1 mm of the pathological recession.
To be effective, if the damage is more severe (5-8 mm pocket depth), it is necessary to combine the two types of lasers every day for at least 1 week.
Visits should be made every 3-6 months, depending on the condition, in order to achieve lasting results. Unlike antibiotics, the effect here is slow but lasting!!!
The patient must be motivated, have good oral hygiene, and have tartar removed regularly twice a year.
What else are high-energy diode lasers used for?

- In surgery – for cutting frenulums, overgrown gums, exposing implants, wisdom teeth, cosmetic shaping of gums. Good disinfection of root canals is achieved during endodontic treatment.
- In cases of arthritis, arthrosis of the temporomandibular joint, and neuralgia, it biostimulates the tissues. Endodontic treatment, especially in cases of gangrene, periodontitis with granulomas and cysts, has a particularly rapid effect on severely infected canals.
- When whitening teeth.
- For sensitive teeth and exposed necks, it reduces sensitivity.
- For better quality impressions of filed teeth.
Are there any contraindications for laser treatment?
The high-energy diode laser has no contraindications and can be used to treat cancer patients, children, or pregnant women. The low-energy diode laser is NOT recommended for cancer patients.
I work with these lasers every day. I really want to promote treatment with them in this article. I feel calm and satisfied in my work and I am happy that I can help my patients!”
